CJD & Associates is multi-faceted in its focus including E&S Brokerage, Program Management, and Self-Insurance Mangement. While the focus at CJD & Associates is providing insurance products to retail agents and in particular the wholesale or Excess and Surplus side of the business, it is also reality that within that focus, there are ways to do more business and to maximize profits. In addition to different distribution systems, there are other vehicles for writing insurance coverage and maximizing profits to CJD.
In addition to the standard Brokerage operation, CJD has program business and Off Shore Captives for not only our parent's insurance needs, but for binding authority and programs. These alternatives are discussed below.
E&S Brokerage
The merger of two firms produced what is now known as Davidson-Babcock, operating under the holding company, CJD & Associates. Excess and Surplus Lines sales and placement is a specialty tried by many and mastered by few. CJD has always been a full service Excess and Surplus lines broker that has developed excellent retail and company partners.
In our offices, KS and NE, the operation of the E&S wholesale business has been very successful and professional. Our firm is contracted with more than 500 retail agents in our respective territories for the purpose of placing E&S business for those contracted agencies.
Program Management
While CJD's primary function could be considered as an underwriter and supplier of wholesale business to retail agents, CJD has expanded that mission to include other delivery and management sources. In addition to being a wholesale agent for the retail agency, we have developed expertise in setting up and managing programs for a dedicated agent or programs of homogeneous risks that can be accessed by many agents. Programs have been managed in our Overland Park, KS office. The programs managed have included Managing General Agent type programs. More typical are current programs that are General Agency controlled. The functions performed for these programs include underwriting, rating, policy issuance, accounting and billing. The only function not handled on these programs is claims. Programs under management are currently written in all 50 states. Our licensing is national as is our knowledge of insurance laws in each state.
Self Insurance Management
Self Insurance Management has two meanings. The first is managing the insurance needs of your parent and the second is to manage the insurance needs of other companies. Both of these needs can be handled through a combination of insurance through both company or a captive company and through internal retention of self insurance. While self insurance can be wise, it must be done with knowledge and understanding of the risks.
Currently CJD is managing and insuring some of our parent's insurance needs through a wholly owned Bermuda based captive. We currently own two Bermuda captives, DB Indemnity and DB Group. DB Indemnity is a single cell, Level One licensed captive insurance company organized expressly to handle some of the insurance needs of the parent. We currently write an excess layer of the parent's errors and omissions policy along with financial guarantee policies issued on loans originated by Brooke Credit Corporation.
The other captive is DB Group, a Level Three captive organized for the purpose of facilitating CJD in its endeavor to take a risk position in some of it's binding authority business. It will also be used for program business where we want to take a risk position. If an opportunity occurred where we had the chance to handle another company's self insurance or retention needs, this captive would be the vehicle to accomplish that retention.
